Head of GBT Science Operations

I am currently the head of GBT Science Operations. I oversee a staff of about one dozen scientist who provide support and development for the Green Bank Telesccope. I am responsible for setting priorities for the work being done on the telescope and to coordinate this work between the different divisions within Green Bank. I am also responsible for overseeing the proposal handling process for all proposals requesting time on the GBT.

Colloquia

I was the colloquium organizer at NRAO, Green Bank from 1998-2009.

GB Summer Student Coordinator

I was the Green Bank REU Summer Student Coordinator from 2004-2009.

IF System Non-linearities

I have been tracking down non-linear effects in the GBT IF system as part of the GBT IF Non-linearity Project.

Here are some reports:
GBT01A_004 Observation Checkout Report - March 31, 2004.
GBT IF System Non-Linearity: April 4 and 8, 2004 Tests Results.
Non-linear data calibration scheme memo coming soon.

RFI Reports

A Ku-Band (12.0 to 15.4 GHz) RFI survey can be found here.
A PF1 800 MHz band (680 to 920 MHz) RFI survey can be found here.
A PF1 450 MHz band (385 to 520 MHz) RFI survey can be found here.

Dish Hints

Here is a web page I have thrown together with several useful (to me) programs for handling data in DISH. You might find something useful there.

GBT Observer's (GO) Interface

I was a developer of the GBT Observer's (GO) Interface.

Calvin Ball

Calvin Ball is the fastest growing sport in all of the Greater Green Bank Metropolitan Area and parts of central New Mexico.

For those of you who don't know the rules or lack thereof here is a repeat of the classic rules (i.e. the ones I can remember) and the history behind Calvin Ball.

Calvin Ball originated from Lord Hobbes and The Supreme Ruler of Rulers of the Whole Universe and Everything Beyond, King Calvin not being able to volley very much while playing regular tennis. From this lack of skill Calvin Ball was born. The first mission of Calvin Ball was to free the players from the tyrannical and oppressive rules of "British Rules Tennis", especially its scoring system, the lack of being able to return serves and most importantly the lack of vollies and excitement.

The basic rules of Calvin Ball are as follows:
1. Any rule can be made up or changed at any time.
2. Calvin Ball cannot be called off for any weather condition other than lightning.
3. The ball must cross the net plane at net height.
4. Any ball that stays in the tennis courts is still in play no matter how big the tennis courts are.
5. All serves must be returnable.
6. Each team is permitted three bounces of the Calvin ball before it must cross the net.
7. Members of a team can only hit the Calvin ball once in succession but may pass it back and forth like in volleyball.
8. Scoring is by ones until 5, win by 2.
9. If the ball gets stuck in the fence then two points are awarded since this is a pseudo-remarkable event (see rule 10).
10. Any remarkable event, such as the Calvin ball being hit through the fence, results in an automatic win.
11. Desertion to other teams is allowable only between and before games.
12. No lobbing during hailstorms - yes this is an actual rule that was created from a real Calvin Ball game.
13. No lobbing after twilight unless back-lite by the Milky Way.
Any rule not explicitly covered above shall be under the direct dictatorial dictations of our Supreme Leading of All Things Worth Knowing, Calvin. If the Great Decider of Decisions of Import, Calvin is not present then all players shall revert to historical Calvin and Hobbes cartoons to gain support for their rulings.

The King of Tyrants, the Czar of Kaisers, Lord of Calvin Ball, Calvin.

Green Bank Earth Station

I was also a support scientist for the
Green Bank Earth Station at NRAO in Green Bank working with the Obriting VLBI project. The GBES is currently supporting the HALCA mission until March 1, 2002. Future missions may include the RadioAstron and VSOP2 missions.
