Tools to Build Web Pages

Web Page editors fall into two broad classes:
  • WYSIWYG -- what you see is what you get. Requires limited knowledge of HTML but powers can be limited to basic HTML features.
  • Code -- requires knowledge of HTML but you can add all the latest features.

In practice, you'll use both kinds of editors but this will change as WYSIWYG editors get stronger.

Editors also come as standalone editors or part of other software systems. For example, Corel and MS office suites can produce web pages; both Netscape and Internet Explorer come with optional WYSIWYG editors.

Win 95/98/NT users have a plethora of excellent choices.

Unix? Only a few editors are worth considering

Let's explore some of the editors that are easily available in Green Bank or that are available for downloading from the WWW.
