Data Reduction Machines
Several powerful machines are available for data reduction. Use of these machines MUST BE PREBOOKED. Unbooked users on these systems are liable to be summarily logged out.
The Booking System
There is an online booking system for reserving workstations. The system is a clone of the Socorro booking system with serial numbers filed off. It is pretty intuitive so there are no detailed instructions here. The username is your standard NRAO username, if you have not been notified of your p assword for this system (It is different from your unix password) contact the helpdesk If y ou have any other difficulty again, contact the helpdesk.
It is possible to make a primary or secondary booking for a workstation, for now just ignore the secondary booking capability.
The public machines listed below are not bookable and are intended for interactive use, they should not be "hogged"
- Bratac
- Volans
- Golina
Please do not lock the desktop on these public machines and leave them for hours on end. The system administrators WILL kill your session to allow other users access to the machine particularly if you have a software license tied up.
Please bear the following in mind when making a booking:
- Do not book a machine for more than 1 week at a time. Follow on bookings can be made but please try and be sensible and fair to others.
- Choose the machine that best matches your needs. Don't book a very powerful machine or one with enormous discs for small jobs.
- Include enough time in your booking for transferring data to and from the booked machine.
Bookings that violate the guidelines will be modified or deleted.
A list of workstations and their capabilities can be found by going to the booking page and hitting the "list workstations" link. Included in the list of workstations is the GASP cluster, this is not currently a publically available machine and you should not make a booking for this cluster just yet unless you are on this list.
Disc space
Once you have booked a machine you will have exclusive use of it and a directory will be created for you to put data/results in. This directory will be deleted the day after your booking expires if you do not delete it yourself. It is up to you to look after your data.
Remember these local disc areas are not backed up.
Data Transfer
To facilitate the transfer of large datasets The machines listed below are connected by a private gigabit network. Each of the bookable machines also runs an rsync daemon.
