About the Workshop

September 12-15

Green Bank, WV

The workshop will be held at NRAO's Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia, where the intimate setting, isolation, and great natural beauty ensure a high level of interaction and communication. Lodging will be provided on or nearby the Observatory grounds. There will be no registration fee, and the NRAO will cover all meal and housing expenses. We can also provide some transportation to Green Bank from nearby airports in Charlottesville VA (CHO), Pittsburgh PA (PIT) and Washington DC (IAD).

The workshop will begin with a reception on the evening of Sunday, 12 September 2010, and end with lunch on Wednesday, 15 September 2010. Weather permitting, workshop participants will be given a guided tour to the top of the Green Bank Telescope, the world's largest fully steerable telescope.

Logistical considerations will limit to workshop attendance to 60, all of whom will be expected to participate actively. Attendees will be housed at or nearby the Observatory, and all activities will take place on the Observatory site. There will be no registration fee, and all meals and housing expenses will be provided by the NRAO Center for Science Education.

Driving directions to the Green Bank Observatory are found here. Please follow these directions as they have been optimized using the best current information on road conditions. If you are coming from the Washington D.C. vicinity (e.g. IAD or GSFC) please follow alternative route 1. Construction of a new 4-lane highway has made this route superior to alternative 2. Driving directions given by GPS receivers and routing software (e.g., Mapquest) are notoriously unreliable within 50 miles of the Observatory. At no time should you leave the paved road.

Information about the Green Bank Observatory is available on our web site http://www.gb.nrao.edu/visitors/. Upon arrival at the Observatory please go to the Residence Hall (first building on the right; see the site map on the above website) where you will receive a packet including information about your housing. There will be a informal reception in the Residence Hall Lounge Sunday evening. All scientific sessions will be in the auditorium of the Jansky Lab.

Part of the Workshop will involve a trip to the top of the Green Bank Telescope, weather permitting. For this you will need closed-toe shoes (i.e. no sandals). A sweater or light jacket is also recommended as temperatures are likely to be cool during the evening. Some rain is possible.

This meeting is organized by the NRAO Green Bank Observatory with support from the Office of Scientific and Academic Affairs of the NRAO/AUI/and the NSF. It is also supported by a grant from the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium.

More information on the meeting agenda, and lodging is forthcoming. Check the website soon!
