CHASE IOLAN
Chase IOLAN Terminal Server
Technical Data Page
IOLAN is a feature rich Ethernet TCP/IP terminal server
which enables serial devices to be connected directly to LANs. The serial
devices can be terminals, printers, modems, bar code readers or any other
RS232 device. With a simple to use menu-driven interface, installation
can be achieved in minutes.
ARCHITECTURE
IOLAN is used wherever serial devices need to be connected to LANs. IOLAN
uses a standard physical ethernet connection and TCP/IP for the software
connection. IOLAN conforms to the most commonly used standards ond offers
a flexible metod for serial connection.
Serial connections using RS232 ecable IOLAN to connect to a wide range of
devices. IOLAN implements the full nine pin connection on both the DB25
and RJ45 connectors, which many other vendors ignore. This allows even
the most complex asynchronous devices such as high speed modems to be
connected directly to the IOLAN and fully controlled without loss of data
or performance.
IOLAN is available in a variety of different packaging styles including
rack-mount and stand-alone.
APPLICATIONS
With IOLAN's flexibility it can be used in a large number of applications,
from workgroup computing to modem pooling. IOLAN is used extensively for
multi-user computer peripheral sharing.
Typical devices that are connected include:
- Terminals
- Printers
- Modems
- PCs (terminal emulation)
- PCs (PPP/SLIP/CSLIP)
- Non Ethernet computer systems
- Bar Code Readers
- Card Swipe Devices
- Medical Equipment
- And many more...
PERFORMANCE
IOLAN has the performance you need to handle a diverse range of high speed
devices in complex applications envirenments. IOLAN can transmit data at
speeds up to 115.2Kbps. This allows high performance devices to function
at very high speeds.
To achieve this high speed and to maintain a high throughput, IOLAN
utilizes the performance of RISC based CD180 OCTARTs in combination with
highly tuned firmware.
EASY INSTALLATION
IOLAN setup can be performed in a matter of minutes using our unique
menuing system. A minimum configuration requires only the IP address to
be set. for installtion requiring further setup, the IOLAN will assist
you in stepping through the additional configuration options including
port speeds, flow control, security and PPP/SLIP connections.
RELIABILITY
Reliability is the single most important aspect of any network device.
IOLAN comes with a lifetime warranty (as does every Chase product). This
is a practical demonstration of faith in both the build quality and design
of the product.
FLEXIBILITY
IOLAN can be configured as either a dedicated virtual connection or the
menuing system can be used to give multiple host access. With a dedicated
connection, the network is transparent to the userand access is provided
to a single pre-selected host. In the menuing mode, the user can hot-key
between fou simultaneous sessions per port. IOLAN can handle all ports
running 4 sessions simultaneously up to the maximum of 64 separate
connections.
MANAGEMENT
Administrators have access to any IOLAN on the network using remote access
(via telnet). This facility allows remote configuration and diagnostics.
IOLAN also supports the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) at
MIB-I, MIB-II and Chase specific enterprise variables. Using SNMP, the
network or system administrator can be advised about various conditions
that appear on the network, often anticipating problems and correcting
them before the users have noticed.
PRINTING & MODEM SUPPORT
IOLAN is a versatile printer and modem server. Printing devices can be
configured as local printers on a UNIX host using the Chase supplied
daemon software. Alternatively, the RCP or LPD protocols can be used on a
port enabling IOLAN to act as a remote print queue. This allows any
system on the network to interface printouts on one print queue or access
a hunt group. Te high bandwidth provided by IOLAN makes it the right
choice for all types of printer connections.
Modems and other bi-directional devices can be configured as local TTY
ports under UNIX and appear as COM ports under DOS/Windows, using a
combination of IOLAN features and reverse telnet software. This allows
programs such as CU, UUCP, KERMIT and many other communications packages
to use IOLAN ports without modification. IOLAN is a perfect platform for
modem pooling, not only because of its high speed but also the enhanced
security. Individual ports can have multi-level password protection.
Security can also be enhanced by using a dedicated connection to a
predetermined host. Access to the administrator's menu is also password
protected and can be enabled/disabled on a per-port basis.
COMMUNICATIONS
IOLAN can be used in applications beyond those normally associated with
terminal servers; with it wealth of software features IOLAN can be
catagorized as a communications server. An IOLAN configured for PPP/SLIP
connections will allow remote network connections over serial lines.
Remote users will appear directly connected to the LAN. The IOLAN acts as
a router by forwarding IP traffic between the LAN and PPP/SLIP
connections.
One of IOLAN's strongest features is Reverse Telnet which is configurable
on a per port basis and can be used to allow systems that do not support
ethernet or TCP/IP to be networked. The reverse telnet feature also used
by the Chase supplied host software to create seamless serial port
connections for modems and printers. These connections appear as local
UNIX ports and can be used with most any application or system
administration tool. Reverse telnet can also be used to make IOLAN a
front end TCP/IP processor allowing non-networked systems access to the
LAN.
