1970 Freeman examined deVancouleur's Reference Catalog(1964) for galaxies that:

1. have a well-defined exponential componant
2. have a well-defined zeropoint for the magnitude scale
3. Aren't highly inclined (b 20)

Freeman found 36 galaxies meeting his criteria, and he obtained reliable data for 20 (Disney, 1976).
