A few of the surveys, though, did find galaxies with central surface brightnesses far enough away from Freeman's value (at least 3 sigma) to showprevious surveys had missed some of the galaxy population.

• Kormendy (1977) found two galaxies with µ(0) = 22.78 mag arcsec and 22.68 mag arcsec and claimed the galaxies were confirmation that faint disk galaxies existed selection effects had screened from us.

• Phillipps, et al (1987), on the other hand, studied a 4.5 by 4.5 region of the Fornax cluster and found 1550 galaxies and two galaxy populations: `normal galaxies', with Gaussian distribution around µ(0) = 21.75 mag arcsec and `LSB' galaxies with a flat distribution from 22.5 mag
  arcsec through µ(0) =24.2 mag arcsec. They concluded the normal field of galaxies does have a preferred value of roughly 21.75, and that although a low surface brightness population does exist, it is not very numerous.
