GREEN BANK WORKSHOP on 21cm HI SURVEY OF THE MILKY WAY
May 21-23, 2001
Dear Colleague:
You are invited to participate in a Green Bank Workshop on the topic
of 21cm HI Surveys of the Milky Way that will be held from May 21-23, 2001
at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank WV, USA,
to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the interstellar
21cm HI line. The Workshop will be the first science gathering of the
International Galactic Plane Survey project, which will combine high
resolution HI surveys of the Galaxy underway at the DRAO, the ATNF
and the VLA. The Workshop will bring together researchers who are
involved in these and other HI surveys, and related surveys of the Milky
Way, to share techniques, results, and prospects for the future.
The Observatory at Green Bank is a particularly appropriate site for
this Workshop, as it is home to the original Ewen-Purcell horn and the
new 100 meter Green Bank Telescope, which will be in operation at the
time of the Workshop.
Green Bank Workshops have a reputation for excellence. The isolation
of Green Bank and its great natural beauty tend to create an atmosphere
conducive to in-depth scientific discussions. The number of Workshop
participants must be limited to about 50 because of restrictions on
housing. Everyone who attends should expect to make a presentation
in one form or another. We encourage participation by students.
There are no plans to publish a proceedings from the Workshop.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
Lodging and meals will be organized by NRAO. Participants will be housed
either in the Observatory residence hall, an Observatory house, or
a nearby motel. Most meals will be in the Observatory caffeteria.
It will be necessary to charge a fee to cover some expenses of the
Workshop. The amount is not certain at this time, but we expect that it
will not be more than $200. The fee will cover all participant expenses
including meals and lodging.
TRAVEL:
Travel arrangements will be the responsibility of each participant.
NRAO will attempt to organize travel for those who can arrive at
Charlottesville, VA, the location of the NRAO headquarters. We will
provide detailed travel information at a later time.
GREEN BANK:
Green Bank, West Virginia, is the site of the first telescopes of the NRAO.
It is located in a Radio Quiet Zone in the mountains of West Virginia
and is surrounded by the Monogahela National Forest. There are
many opportunities for outdoor activities in the area which participants
may take advantage of before or after the Workshop.
The Green Bank facility of the NRAO has more than 100 employees including
15 radio astronomers and an equal number of engineers and other
professionals. The Observatory is the site of the new 100 meter,
unblocked-aperture, radio telescope which is now undergoing initial tests.
Information about the NRAO at Green Bank can be obtained from the web
site: http://info.gb.nrao.edu.
COMMUNICATIONS:
There will be a specific website for the Workshop containing detailed travel
information, lists of participants and so on. For now, email concerning
the Workshop should be addressed to scurry@nrao.edu. You may also call:
Tel: (304) 456-2011
FAX: (304) 456-2170.
ATTENDANCE FORM:
If you are interested in the Workshop please edit the form below and
return it by email to scurry@nrao.edu. Because of the extremely
limited accommodations at Green Bank we ask that you respond as soon
as possible so that if you cannot participate someone else can attend.
