The ZY contains a Class III laser and can constitute an eye hazard, and thus should be treated with due caution[19]. In addition, the Beam Steering Mirror moves under automatic program control, and can attain high velocities, presenting another physical hazard to persons near the system. It is important therefore to be aware of the two mechanisms to turn off the laser and servo systems:

1. Front panel Auto/Manual switch
2. Software control of laser and servo systems.

Under no circumstances should these systems be operated unless adequate precautions have been taken to protect personnel. When applicable, existing safety procedures should be followed[20].
