For Interested Teachers or Organizations
The Quiet Skies Project was developed to introduce students to radio astronomy. While it's difficult and expensive to build a small radio telescope that is capable of detecting the very weak signals emanating from objects in space, it's quite easy to detect man-made radio signals. We call these signals RFI, or Radio Frequency Interference.
Using the Quiet Skies Detector and activities, your students will learn about radio astronomy science, and the problems faced by all radio telescopes.
When you sign up to participate you may borrow a complete Quiet Skies kit which includes everything you need to conduct the activities and experiments. Included are two Quiet Skies Detectors developed by NRAO engineers. These detectors are sensitive scientific equipment! You may use the kit for 2-4 weeks and then return it to us. We'll pass it on to the next Quiet Skies Educator.
