The Antennae Galaxies, NGC 4038/9, represent the nearest major merger at a distance of 21 Mpc. The merger has
stimulated recent star formation over a region about 1.7 arcminutes (10 kpc) in total extent, with the star formation
concentrated in thousands of visible and obscured super star clusters. The regions of star formation include both
flat-spectrum thermal radio emission and optically thin synchrotron emission. We propose a set of deep VLBI
integrations with the VLBA and GBT at 256 Mbit/s in order to search for young supernovae down to a detection
threshold 10 times the power of Cas A. We expect to detect 10--15 young radio supernovae at this level. |
