AbSciCon 2006 GBT Scale Model
Scale Model Green Bank Telescope |
Build Your Own! |
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), in conjunction with
the
SETI Institute, and
NASA invite the attendees of the
2006 AbSciCon
on an excursion to the observatory at Green Bank, West Virginia.
Our Tour will feature a trip to the top of the 45-story-tall Green Bank
Telescope.
The GBT Model (right) shows the two elevators and stairs to the
focus of our tour.
Print out our souvenir Card and construct your model, following the
simple instructions. For a sturdier model, print the model on
card stock. Scissors are required, but no tape or glue are needed.
|
|
Assembly Hints |
Download and print-out the model on card-stock paper.
|
Cut around the model edges, on the red lines.
|
Note the locations of the places (labeled a, b, c, d)
where the opposite sides of the card come together to make the model.
|
Fold completely back (completely flat)
all of the dashed blue lines.
|
Fold the card in half along the verticle blue dashed line.
|
Make the two cuts in the telescope dish surface, marked a.
|
Attach the opposite sides of the telescope surface.
|
Make sure the triangular notches in the b tabs are cut.
Attach the top dish support structure tabs together, under the
dish surface.
|
Attach the front of the azimuth support structure cross members,
marked c.
|
Attach the back of the azimuth support structure cross members,
marked d.
|
You're done!
|
For scale, the card shows the tour bus and people near the wheels
of the telescope.
Note that the structure is very high. Those wishing to remain on
solid ground may want to just view the lower parts of the structure.
