NATIONAL RADIO ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORY Green Bank, WV MEMORANDUM June 9, 1998 TO: R. Fisher, R. Lacasse, R. Norrod, M. McKinnon, C. Niday, T. Weadon FROM: R. Lacasse SUBJ.: Minutes of Interference Protection Group 5/26/98 Meeting In attendance: Fisher, Lacasse, Weadon Minutes Approved. Call Outs None. GBT Receiver Room Test Fisher reported that he has discussed details of the Receiver Room shielding effectiveness test with Norrod, MkKinnon and Hogg. Norrod has provided him with a list of things that must be completed before the start of testing. Fisher will provide MkKinnon with a complete list of tasks and scheduling information. The goal is to complete the test in August. Action Items: ****Lacasse to provide Fisher with vacation schedule for August. ****Weadon to check on RFI gasket for the room. PC based Continuum Detector Weadon has made an initial cut on the programming of the new A/D card. One limitation of the system (mainly due to the PC and not the A/D) is the maximum number of points that can be acquired while sampling at 20 KHz. This is limited to about 1 million. Fisher stated that this would not be a serious constraint, as most measurements would be made at slower switching rates (in the neighborhood of 100 Hz), allowing generous integration time before filling up the computer's memory. The PC system will soon be interfaced to the hardware designed by Schiebel, and integration tests will be performed. After this, a demo will be scheduled. Site Radios Discussion postponed due to the absence of Niday. Interference Reporting System McMullen and Balser still need to incorporate comments from the IPG before training of operators can begin. Interference Monitoring Station The possibility of splitting up the work on the monitoring station to speed it up was discussed. Electronics Division Head Membership on IPG Weadon is being replaced by John Ford as head of the Electronics Division at the end of this month. Weadon stated that he felt it was important that the head of the electronics division be tuned in to the work of the IPG, since he can allocate resources and some money for the IPG. He also stated his willingness to continue to help the IPG technically. Action item: **** Fisher to speak with Ford about his desires for involvement in the IPG. Next Meeting July 14, at 0800.
