GBT OPERATIONS PROCEDURES

Number: OP-11
Title: Active Surface Control Last Revision: 11 MAR 03

General

The following procedure is used turn the active surface on and off. For the time being, the active surface is used for observations at x band and above. For observations below x band, and especially prime focus, the active surface is to be switched off. This measure is being taken to reduce RFI at these frequencies. Currently there are steps being taken to alleviate the RFI. In that event this procedure will be modified.

Info

For the active surface to be truly "active" the Active Surface manager has to be selected in the system selection portion of the Scan Coordinator. Otherwise, the Active Surface Manager will not receive updates as to antenna position and will not make adjustments to the active surface.

The procedural information contained in this document reflects the procedure as outlined by Amy Shelton and Richard Prestage. This document is found here: http://wikio.nrao.edu/bin/view/GB/Operate/ActiveSurfacePowerOnOff

These procedures are in effective as of the release of M&C v3.16.

Shutting down the active surface

STEP

ACTION
1

In the Active Surface CLEO window (Standard tab), deselect "FEM Model". "Zero Offsets" should be selected. Click on the "Prepare" button.

2

Type showSurface at the Linux prompt if the showSurface GUI is not already up.

3

Select "All Supplies Off" from the pull-down menu located on the right hand side of the GUI near the center. A message should appear in the CLEO message window stating that the Active Surface is turning off all power supplies. This takes a few minutes. When this message is cleared, the power supplies are off.

4

Double check that the supplies are off by first pressing the "Entire Surface" button on the showSurface GUI located near the bottom of the window. Then select "Display". The MPS (motor power supplies) and TPS (transnet power supplies) should display a "1". One can also confirm that the Active Surface is off by examining the "Advanced" tab of the Active Surface CLEO window. The number of disabled actuators should be 2209 and the stand-by level should be "Computer On".

Starting the active surface

STEP

ACTION
1 Type showSurface at the Linux prompt if the showSurface GUI is not already up.

2

Select "Operational" from the pull-down menu located on the right hand side of the GUI near the center. A message should appear in the CLEO message window stating that the Active Surface is enabling the surface. This should be pretty fast. When this message is cleared, the power supplies are on and the surface is ready for operation.

3

Double check that the supplies are on by first pressing the "Entire Surface" button on the showSurface GUI located near the bottom of the window. Then select "Display". The MPS (motor power supplies) and TPS (transnet power supplies) should display a "0". One can also confirm that the Active Surface is on by examining the "Advanced" tab of the Active Surface CLEO window. The number of disabled actuators should be relatively small and the stand-by level should be "All On".

4

This last step is dependent on the wishes of the observer.

If the observer wishes to use the FEM (higher frequencies), in the Active Surface CLEO window (Standard tab):

"Zero Offsets" should be selected.

"FEM Model" should be selected

"Random Offsets" should NOT be selected

"Mode" should be REAL

"Control Mode" should be ON

Click on the "Prepare" button. The Elevation should correspond the the current elevation; "Disabled Actuators" should be around 50 or less; "Command Peak" should be less than 1000; "IQ RMS should be around 50 or less".

If the observer does not wish to use the FEM (lower frequencies): In the Active Surface CLEO window (Standard tab), make sure that "Zero Offsets" is selected. Click on the "Prepare" button.

Notes:

Be careful with the pull-down menu in the showSurface GUI. If you click on the pull-down menu and change your mind, move the mouse cursor off of the pull-down menu BEFORE releasing the mouse button. Otherwise you will select whatever item your mouse cursor was on when you released the mouse button.

You may want to decrease the showSurface GUI update time from 15 seconds to 5 seconds for faster updates. You can change the update time by using the slide bar located at the bottom right hand corner of the showSurface GUI. The update time specifies how often the GUI communicates with the Active Surface to obtain new monitor information.
