THE MONITOR & CONTROL SYSTEM

An Operation's Description

Overview

The Green Bank Telescope (GBT) is designed to be a flexible instrument, accommodating many different types of front ends, back ends, and observing styles. In order to support this flexibility, system architecture was developed according to the principle of modularity. The system is a loosely coupled group of cooperating computers, tied together to form the Monitor and Control System (M&C).

As with all computer-based systems, the M&C system can be broadly divided into hardware and software. Software is intangible, so we often create names for it. Ygor is the name selected for the generic portion of the GBT monitor and control software. As the story goes, the name was selected referencing Dr. Frankenstein's faithful servant. It's not an acronym, but if you must, we like Ygor Generic Operating Resource.
