GBT Network Switches
There is no clear-cut winner in the analysis. Accordingly, we have
chosen to use a switched Ethernet topology, connecting the switches
together with a Fast Ethernet backbone. We have gained much
experience with Switched Ethernet over the past year. We have chosen
the XYLAN Omni-5 switches to provide the network connectivity for the
telescope.
Xylan Corp. Xylan produces switches that can be used with
Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, ATM, and FDDI backbones. We are currently
specifying a 100 Mbit Fast Ethernet backbone.
Control Room LAN Switch
The Control Room Lan Switch must provide the following features:
- 10 Mb/s Ethernet ports
- These low-speed ports will be used to connect legacy equipment,
such as old workstations, printers, and the like. A minimum of 2
segments, each with a 10 Base 2 connection, will be provided. In
addition, a 10 mb/s port will be provided to link the Site Lan to the
telescope.
- 100 Mb/s Ethernet ports
- These high-speed ports will be used to connect the workstations
in the control room to each other, and to the site lan. These ports
will be 100 base FX ports (fiber). A minimum of 6 ports will be
provided.
- Backbone port
- A high speed backbone port will be required to interface the
switch to the Site LAN. The site LAN switch in the Jansky Lab is
connected here via a Fast Ethernet port.
Equipment Room LAN Switch
The Equipment Room Lan Switch must provide the following features:
- 10 Mb/s Ethernet ports
- These low-speed ports will be used to connect the control
equipment and workstations to the LAN. 10 10Base2 Ethernet segments
will be provided in the Equipment room.
- Backbone port
- A high speed backbone port will be required to interface the
switch to the Telescope Backbone. This will be Fast Ethernet.
Alidade Room LAN Switch
The Alidade Room Lan Switch must provide the following features:
- 10 Mb/s Ethernet ports
- These low-speed ports will be used to connect the control
equipment and workstations to the LAN. A minimum of 6 10Base2
Ethernet segments will be provided in the Alidade room.
- 100 Mb/s Ethernet port
- This high-speed port will be used to connect the pointing workstation
in the alidade room to the switch. This port will be a 100 base FX port (fiber).
- Backbone port
- A high speed backbone port will be required to interface the
switch to the Telescope Backbone. This will be Fast Ethernet.
