Setting up the BCPM(s) for use with the BCPM M&C Manager

Note: If you are having trouble with the BCPM, you may need to have the operator restart the BCPM manager running on vortex and then follow the procedure below. This is especially necessary in the case that the previous observer has not done step 10.
  1. Start GO on the control computer.
  2. Start CLEO device explorer on the control computer.
    1. In CLEO device explorer, make sure that the BCPM Coordinator is off. Note that there are two BCPM Managers which are controlled by a Coordinator. If you turn the Coordinator off, then all of its children (BCPM1 and BCPM2) also turn off (same thing for on).
  3. Start the message window in CLEO on the control computer.
  4. ssh to sadira with a valid NRAO user account from a machine other than the one used to control the observation. The reason for using another computer is that the BCPM screens take up a lot of room as do the CLEO and GO screens; it is best to be able to view all of these screens at once, hence use two different computers.
  5. Create an xterm and ssh to bcpm1 as bcpm1 (see A. Shelton for the password).
    1. Select "L" from the choices in the window.
    2. Type "ui" to start the UsrInt program and the user interface. The user interface is made up of a textual user interface (or tui) and a series of graphical monitoring windows.
    3. Enter the group name for the observation (e.g. bcpm1).
  6. If you are using both BCPMs for the observation, create an xterm and ssh into bcpm2 as bcpm2 (see A. Shelton for the password).
    1. Select "L" from the choices in the window.
    2. Type "ui" to start the UsrInt program and the user interface.
    3. Enter the group name for the observation (e.g. bcpm2).
  7. Using the device explorer window started previously, turn the BCPM Coordinator on.
  8. Check the message window started previously for any error messages from the BCPM. Also, check the PSPM tui window to make sure that the initialization procedure occurred without errors.
  9. You are now ready to observe via GO.
  10. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO THIS STEP. Otherwise, the next observer will most likely have problems using the BCPM. When observation is complete,
    1. Turn the BCPM Coordinator off via the device explorer window in CLEO.
    2. Log out of bcpm1 and bcpm2 (if used).
