Backup Procedures for users of HALEBOPP, the NT 4.0 Server in Green Bank, WV.

All files on the Green Bank NT server (HALEBOPP) are backed up as per the following schedule:

Wednesday 11:30 PM - Full Backup This will backup the entire server, including the OS, application software, and user directories.  Each weekly full backup tape will be retained for a period of 8 weeks before the tape can be reused.  The first full backup of each month will be retained indefinitely.
Thu - Tues 11:30 PM - Differential The differential backups will backup every file on the server that is new or has been modified since the most recent full backup.  Each nightly differential tape will be retained for a period of 8 weeks before being reused.  Each tape will contain 6 nightly differential backup sets appended one following the other.

Procedures for Backing Up Your Files

If you have files that you would like to have backed up on a regular basis, simply store those files in your user directory on HALEBOPP.  Your user directory on HALEBOPP is generally mapped to drive letter U (refer to diagram 1).  The drive will be labeled as "username on 'Halebopp' (U:)"

Diagram 1.

Because your user directory is on the server disk, it will be automatically included in the nightly backups...nothing further for you to worry about.

To determine which tape contains the data that you need to have restored, refer to the  tapes table.

Disk space is limited, so please ensure that only the files that you need to be backed up are in the backed up area.  When the disk fills up, administrators  may ask
people to remove files.

If you need files restored from a backup, please see Charlie Myers, Chuck Beverage, Ed Childers, or Bob Payne.
